Planning your wedding in Chicago? Before the celebration, there’s one key task every couple must complete, and that’s applying for a marriage license. Whether you're hosting a large wedding or planning an intimate ceremony, this legal step is required before your big day.
Here's a complete guide for newly engaged couples on how to apply for your Chicago marriage license, including how to start the process online.
Start Your Chicago Marriage License Application Online
You can begin the application online by visiting the official Cook County Clerk’s Marriage License Application page or visit this link. This is a great way to save time before heading to the office in person.
After submitting your application online, both partners must still appear together in person at a Cook County Clerk’s Office to show identification, pay the fee, and receive the physical license.
Where to Apply in Person
You’ll need to finish the application in person at any Cook County Clerk's Office. The downtown location is:
Cook County Clerk – Vital Records
118 N. Clark St.
Room 120
Chicago, IL 60602
(312) 603-7790
You don’t need an appointment, but it’s smart to check the Clerk’s website for office hours, additional office locations, and any updates.
Marriage License Requirements in Chicago
Here’s what to bring when applying:
A valid photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport)
The $60 license fee (payable by cash or credit/debit card)
Complete and sign the application.
Both people must apply together and be at least 18 years old.
Waiting Period and Expiration
You must wait 24 hours after obtaining your license before getting married.
The license is valid for 60 days and must be used within Cook County.
Who Can Officiate Your Wedding in Chicago
Wedding officiants in Illinois are not required to register with any government office before performing a marriage. If you’re seeking a heartfelt and customized ceremony, consider Marry Me Ceremonies. I specialize in meaningful, personal wedding ceremonies for couples across Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.
After the Wedding: Filing and Marriage Certificate
Once the ceremony is complete, your officiant will sign and return the marriage license to the Cook County Clerk. Once filed, you can request certified copies of your marriage certificate, which you’ll need for name changes and official updates. Copies can be requested here - https://www.cookcountyclerkil.gov/vital-records/marriage-civil-union/marriage-certificates.
